5 Awesome Alternative Christmas Songs

There’s no easy way to put it. It’s Christmas time, cue awkward Christmas work parties, tacky, ironic jumpers and more Cliff Richard than you can shake a candy cane at. But it’s not all bad, letting yourself go, drinking more whisky than humanly possible and watching Die Hard 2 are personal highlights. But let’s face it, it’s the only time of the year we’re forced to listen to The Cheeky Girls – “Have a Cheeky Christmas” or Wham. But there’s a few shining lights on the withering tree that is Christmas tunes, so here it goes; 5 awesome alternative Christmas songs that are guaranteed to shake up your Christmas party.

Julian Casablancas – I Wish It Was Christmas Today

The Strokes front man’s stab at a christmas tune is a cheery rock and roll work out. Fast passed, electric and still with that New York feel he always brings to the table. Imagine the strokes if Albert Hammond Jr. had bells instead of strings.

Run The Jewels – A Christmas Fucking Miracle

Probably not one my Gran’s going to appreciate at Christmas dinner but the New York Hip-Hop super group hit home pretty hard here. But is it really that christmassy? There’s sleigh bells and that’s good enough for me.

The Knife  – Christmas Reindeer

Swedish electronic maestros, The Knife, made a pretty good effort with Christmas Reindeer, a darker seasonal track with a bit more of a soft touch about it.

The Crookes – It’s Just Not Christmas Without You

A more classic take on the Christmas song, The Crookes swooning yule time effort is like something you’d expect to hear on any christmas compilation but still completely current. Full of festive merriment it’s the perfect modern christmas track.

The Killers – Don’t Shoot Me Santa

Let’s face it, The Killers are the kings of indie Christmas song, there’s a whole bunch you could choose from, but their ode to a murderous santa has to be the pick of the bunch. Starting like a country-folk classic and moving into something out of Sam’s Town it’s a modern Christmas masterclass.
